Spotlight: Talking Science

Techniques and technology for science talks
Written and Directed by Randy Olson, Ph.D

What's the most incomprehensible slide you've ever seen in a science talk? What's the most "um's" you've ever heard from a speaker in 10 minutes? What's the most confusing talk you've ever listened to (or at least pretended to listen to)?

"Talking Science" is a 20-minute dvd that looks at the effectiveness of scientific talks through interviews with scientists from a range of disciplines from Chemistry to Physics to Biology, as well as interviews with experts from Communications, Theater, and Cinema, and follows one scientist at a national meeting from rehearsal to presentation to post-presentation analysis.

The dvd reviews elements of Technique such as speaking style, rehearsal, structuring of information, and elements of Technology such as Power Point, screen size.

Although relevant to all scientists, the video is likely to be most valuable in the training of new graduate students.
