Underwater Research and Scientific Diving
during the Catalina Semester

You're on an island for 4 months, surrounded by water. Why not spend your time IN the water? Catalina, with its dazzling diversity of seaweeds, invertebrates and fish, is an extraordinary place to conduct underwater research.

To scuba dive at WIES, you will need to join the scientific diving program. Since USC is an organizational member of the American Academy of Underwater Sciences (AAUS), you must satisfy scientific diver training requirements to dive at the lab. If you are certified as a scientific diver with another AAUS institution, you may dive at the lab through reciprocity. Please contact the Dive Safety Officer, Gerry Smith, for details (310) 510-4022 or gsmith@usc.edu. For more information on our facilities and scientific diving program, see our diving web page.

How do I become certified as a scientific diver?

If you are not currently a scientific diver, you will need training. First, you need to submit paperwork to the Dive Safety Officer. Prerequisites include a physical exam, a swim test, a completed application, 12 or more logged dives, and proof of annual equipment service. Copies of these forms can be downloaded from our diving web page.
