Marine Population Dynamics – Spring Semester

  • Island Biogeography and Field Ecology (BISC 447L),
  • Conservation Biology and Population Genetics (BISC 373L),
  • Comparative Physiology of Animals (BISC 437L),
  • Directed Research (BISC 490)
  • Prerequisites (or equivalent):
    * (BISC 120 L or BISC 121 L)
    * (BISC 220 L or BISC 221 L)

The Microbial Earth – Fall Semester

  • Aquatic Microbiology (BISC 431L),
  • Molecular Approaches to Microbial Diversity (BISC 455L),
  • Ecosystem Function and Earth Systems, (BISC 474L),
  • Directed Research (BISC 490)
  • Prerequisites (or equivalent):
    * (BISC 120 L or BISC 121 L)

Fall 2008 Dates
The following are important dates and deadlines for the Fall (August through December 2008) Catalina Semester. If you have ANY questions, please contact our office at (213) 740-6780 or send questions to catsem@usc.edu. Applications accepted on a rolling basis. All applications due by April 27. Late applications may be considered if space is available.

April 27 Applications Due for Catalina Fall semester

August 18-22 Open registration

August 25 Semester begins: All students to Catalina/ Orientation

September 1 Labor Day holiday

Applications: Sign me up!

Ready for the semester of your life? Here's how to make it happen!

  1. Fill out the completed application. If you have any trouble downloading the application, email us (catsem@usc.edu) and we will make sure you get one.
  2. Obtain a copy of your latest transcript (unofficial is fine).
  3. Get your letter of recommendation. Ask a professor or teaching assistant that knows you well.

Application materials for Fall Catalina Semester are due April 27, 2008.

There are several ways to transmit your completed application materials to the USC Wrigley Institute:

Special Instructions for Non-USC students

Not a USC student? Not to worry! The USC Catalina Semester is available to all qualified junior and senior status students from all accredited colleges and universities. We're here to help!

Your first step is to discuss the Catalina Semester with your academic advisor. We encourage you to visit the web pages together and become familiar with the program. If either you or your advisor have any content-specific questions on the courses, please contact the instructor listed in the course description.

Once you are accepted into the program, we will assist you with travel information. Students need to be in Los Angeles by the morning of January 9, 2006.

Before departing for Catalina, you must fill out a form called "Permit to Register". It's a simple form, but MUST be filled out in person at the USC Registration Office. You can view a sample form here (PDF format).

After completing this form, you will be required to pay USC Tuition.

That's it! You're done!

Tuition and Fees

USC Tuition:

The estimated USC tuition for Spring 2008 is $17,606.

USC Students: Your financial aid package will remain the same even though your courses are on Catalina Island.

Non-USC Students: If you are receiving financial aid at your home institution, please contact your financial aid advisor for transfer information. Your tuition must be paid in full before you leave for Catalina.

Wrigley Marine Science Center Room and Board:

$3,800 (payable in installments, if desired)

Lab fees:

$200 per Biology course.

ESTIMATED book costs:

Fall Semester $175

Additional Expenses:

  • Travel to Los Angeles
  • All food not served at the Wrigley Marine Science Center
  • Personal expenses

Credit

All courses taught during the Catalina Semester are worth 4 units each. Non-USC students are encouraged to meet with their advisors to explore transfer credit.
