What is the USC Family Science Program?

The USC Family Science Program is a family science program located at the famed USC Wrigley Marine Science Center on the "quiet end" of Catalina Island. A dream vacation for budding scientists of all ages, the program is chock full of exciting educational activities led by experts from the USC Wrigley Marine Science Center.

Do I have to be a USC alum to attend?

No, everyone is welcome!

Is there a minimum age?

All participants must be at least 5 years of age by the time they attend the Family Science Program and accompanied by an adult.

What activities are included?

  • Snorkeling/swimming with staff biologist
  • Lectures by USC scientists
  • Ocean kayaking
  • Arts and Crafts, science projects
  • Examining microscopic plants and animals in our lab
  • Outdoor exploration of Catalina with our naturalists
  • No Scuba activities or equipment, must make own arrangements
  • New activities for returning participants

    What is included?

    Travel to and from Catalina, all meals during the course of the program session, kayaks, wet suits and snorkel gear.

    What are the accommodations like?

    Dormitory-style housing consists of two-room suites joined by a bathroom, perfect for a family of four. There are also dorms with private bathrooms. The comfortable rooms have twin beds, desks, bookshelves, dressers, and large closets. There are also furnished one-bedroom apartments and one furnished two-bedroom apartment with kitchen facilities.

    Our newest addition is the Boone Center for Environmental Leadership. These "Island Elegant" units are furnished and decorated for your utmost comfort, truly a home away from home. Our one-bedroom apartments boast a spacious living room as well as a full kitchen. We also have two-bedroom houses equipped with full fridges and light prep kitchens (microwave, no stove). The perfect place to have a quiet family vacation. 

    Linens and bath towels are provided for all units. All housing is subject to availability.

    Adjoining the dormitory-apartment complex is the cafeteria and lounge. The lounge area is furnished with a coffee table, couches, chairs, color television/VCR/DVD, and piano is nearby. Pool and ping-pong tables are also available.
