All courses are designed to make use of the special settings of Catalina Island. Students have unique opportunities to conduct independent and directed research projects under the mentorship of the USC and visiting faculty. Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) - The University of Southern California Wrigley Institute for Environmental Studies has received National Science Foundation Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) funding to support 8 fellowships for undergraduate student research at the University of Southern California. "Geobiology-Marine Sciences at the Interface between the Life and Earth Sciences" draws on a diverse faculty from marine environmental biology and earth sciences. Students will design and conduct independent projects under faculty supervision within several broad research areas including: Biogeochemistry of oceans and sediments - links between present and past, evolution and population genetics of marine organisms, and physiology of individuals and systems ecology of ecosystems. Catalina Summer Courses - Open to anyone wishing to experience the USC Wrigley Institute's Catalina Campus, these classes will broaden your educational horizons and prepare you for the next step in your educational or professional career. Course offerings range from high school level to intensive graduate courses. Wrigley Institute faculty are renowned for their ability to craft some of the most distinctive learning experiences using the intensive, marine lab setting coupled to the merger of cutting edge research into the educational process. The courses last from 1-3 weeks during which students reside at the Wrigley Marine Science Center (WMSC) on Catalina Island. Summer Graduate Intern Scholarship - PhD candidates are invited to apply for a scholarship in the USC-WMSC Graduate Intern Program. Interns will conduct research at the Wrigley Marine Science Center on Catalina Island. A limited number of graduate internships are available. Middle School and High School Girls' Science Camps - With the USC Provost's Office, we offer summer science courses for girls. These special courses help young girls to maintain a special science focus through the challenges of adolescence. Middle School Boys Science Camp - Similar to the Girls' Science Camps, along with the USC Provost's Office, we offer summer science courses for men. These special courses help to encourage young men to pursue science through the challenges of adolescence. Libbie H. Hyman Memorial Scholarship - The purpose of this scholarship, in memory of Libbie H. Hyman, one of America's foremost invertebrate zoologists, provides assistance to students to take courses OR to carry on research on INVERTEBRATES at a marine, freshwater, or terrestrial field station. The amount of the 2003 award was $750. The Hyman Grant is intended to help support a FIRST field station experience for a first or second year graduate student, or an advanced undergraduate. Sustainable Cities - This National Science Foundation (NSF) funded program enriches the education of graduate students by adding an interdisciplinary, environmental curriculum to their Ph.D. program. The program has 5 thematic areas, one of which involves analysis of development and conservation on Catalina Island and a second which looks at coastal environmental quality. Wrigley Institute faculty lead these two themes and make special use of the Catalina Island for their success. Island Explorers - This innovative marine science curriculum was developed by the USC Sea Grant Program, part of the Wrigley Institute. It allows teachers to educate students in math and science, linked to the state standards, while using the marine and environmental settings that keep students interests high. The full program also involves an overnight fieldtrip to Catalina Island where they put the new knowledge about science into action. Island Scholars - All of the non-profits on Catalina Island have banded together to create a set of educational offerings for the students in the Avalon school. We cover the marine science components in collaboration with the Catalina Island Marine Institute (CIMI) and the students spend a few days at the lab conducting fieldwork as a culmination of the year's activities. It has the additional benefit of getting the Island non-profits to work more closely together, sharing ideas and expertise. USC Family Science Program - These are special family science experiences that bring 2-3 generations together to learn about the environment, connect to the university and have a great time. These are offered primarily to USC alumni and to Friends of the Wrigley Institute in a partnership with the USC Alumni Association. Elderhostel - These programs offer groups of senior citizens a week-long adventure that is a mix of learning and fun. Saturdays at the Lab and Lab Tours - We hold an open house every Saturday in the summer. We also arrange special versions of this open house to any organized group that shows an interest. Each year we set aside a couple of weekends for the USC Associates and we also run specialized programs for many of the Yacht clubs. Friends of the Wrigley Institute (FOWI) - This is our primary support group. It includes the people who were members of the old "Oceanographic Associates" support group. We offer these people special programs and the opportunity to interact with us more closely. Members also enjoy special benefits like the use of some of our moorings. Storm-water Conferences - We have hosted a number of special conferences on Catalina Island that bring together representatives of all of the stakeholders in the issue of coastal water quality and storm-drain runoff. These meetings use the special setting of Catalina to get these different players to interact with the scientists to create more innovative solutions to this problem. Participants: Anthony F. Michaels, Sheldon Kamieniecki, Linda Duguay National Ocean Science Bowl (NOSB) - We co-host, with the NASA Jet Propulsion Lab (JPL), the Los Angeles regional competition in the National Ocean Science Bowl. This is a quiz competition for teams of high school students from around Southern California.
